You can download and install plug-ins or libraries to add extra functionality to Audacity. Plug-ins can give you extra effects, or more audio generation and analysis capability. Adding libraries can allow you to import or export additional audio formats.
Plug-In Installation
To install new LADSPA or Nyquist plug-ins, place them in the Plug-Ins folder inside the Audacity installation folder. On Windows computers, this is usually under 'Program Files'. On Mac OS X, it is usually under 'Applications'. On Linux, you can use various plug-in locations. Restart Audacity, then the addded plug-ins will appear underneath the divider in the 'Effect', 'Generate' or 'Analyze' menus.
LADSPA-inproppe
Audacity has built-in support for LADSPA plug-ins. These plug-ins are mostly built for Linux, but some are available for other operating systems too. Audacity includes some sample LADSPA effects. Windows users can install an additional set of over 90 LADSPA plug-ins. There is a similar set of LADSPA plug-ins for Mac. Audacity can load VST effects on all the operating systems like Windows, Linux and Mac, but it cannot load the VST instruments. In this case, there is no need for the VST enabler at all. The plugin of VST effects are found in several websites like Hitsquad: Windows, Mac, KVR Audio: Windows, Mac, Open Directory (Windows, Mac). Update 2.2.1: VST Plug-ins Audacity can load VST effects (but not VST instruments) on all operating systems. The VST Enabler is no longer required. LV2 Plug-Ins
Audacity has built-in support for LV2 plug-ins, which are an extensible successor of LADSPA effects. LV2 plug-ins are mostly built for Linux, but Audacity supports LV2 on all operating systems. To install LV2 plug-ins, place them in the system LV2 location then restart Audacity.
Nyquist-inproppe
Audacity has built-in support for Nyquist effects on all operating systems. You can download additional Nyquist plug-ins, or create your own using the Nyquist programming language. Nyquist code can be tested using 'Nyquist Prompt' under the Effect menu, or code for Nyquist plug-ins that generate audio can be quickly tested with Nyquist Generate Prompt.
VST-inproppe
Audacity can load VST effects (but not VST instruments) on all operating systems. The VST Enabler is no longer required. Enable 'Rescan VST effects' in the Effects Preferences and restart Audacity when you want to add new effects. See 'How do I install VST plug-ins?' for more information.

Audio Unit Plug-Ins
On Mac OS X only, Audacity loads Audio Unit plug-ins from system plug-in directories. Audacity will not recognize any Audio Units in its own 'plug-ins' folder.

The FFmpeg import/export library allows Audacity to import and export many additional audio formats such as AC3, AMR(NB), M4A and WMA, and to import audio from video files. Audacity 2.0.6 and later requires FFmpeg 1.2 to 2.3.x (or libav 0.8 to 0.10.x). To install FFmpeg, please read our FFmpeg FAQ.
Audacity VST Enabler is a program that allows the VST plugins to work. Visual Studio Technology (VST), on the other hand, is a plug-in software that adds several effects in an audio recording and editing tool.
It provides a variety of functionalities including virtual instrument sounds. However, VST enabler is no longer required for Audacity’s latest version. You can now download the VST plugins and directly add it to the Audacity audio recorder to enable the effects.
If you are using an older version of Audacity (e.g. v. 1.3), you might need to get the Audacity VST Enabler. But it has been removed in the Audacity’s official site since the release of the newer version. The only choice you can have is to update your Audacity and download the VST plugins.

Since Audacity supports thousands of plugins, VST provided an array of plugins that you can get for free. These plugins are available in Audacity for Windows, Audacity for Mac, and Audacity for Linux. Here’s a tutorial on how you can install them.

Step 2. Open the Download folder on your computer and find the plugin you downloaded. Step 3. Extract all the files or install the plugin.
Step 4. Find the .dll file on your computer and copy it to the Audacity’s directory. To open the directory for Audacity, just go to the Program Files on your computer, find Audacity and locate the Plugins folder. Paste the copied file inside the plugins folder to add the plugins to the library.

Step 5. Open the Audacity and click on Effects, the plugins will appear in that tab. If you can’t find the downloaded plugin, click the add/remove plugin command under the Effects menu.

To see if the plugin you have downloaded works
- Open the Audacity application on your computer.
- Record an audio or import a prerecorded sound from your computer.
- Select the part of the audio you want to enhance.
- Go to the Effect menu and click the effect you want to add.
- Some of the effects can be added automatically on your project once you click them. Some require you to set the parameters for the effects to work.

Note: If you want to add Audacity plugins, you must see first if these are compatible with your device or operating system. Otherwise, it will not work even if you follow the installation process correctly. Some of the VST plugins you can get are:
